Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chocolate chips for extra fudginess

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, mix the sugar and melted butter until well combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the red food coloring and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, and mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips if using.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

For a more intense red color, add an extra teaspoon of red food coloring if needed. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
