  • For frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black food coloring.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
  8. Frost the cooled cakes and stack them for a layered effect.
