Christmas Ornament Sugar Cookies

  • Author: Chef Lalybeth

Description

Classic, buttery sugar cookies cut into festive ornament shapes and decorated with colorful icing. A delightful and creative holiday treat for the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Royal icing and sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a smooth dough forms. Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out shapes with ornament-shaped cookie cutters.
  5. Place cookies on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Once completely cool, decorate the cookies with royal icing and festive sprinkles. Let the icing set completely before serving or storing.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
