Description

A classic British dish featuring lightly battered fish and golden chips, perfect for a hearty family meal.


Ingredients

  • 500g white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
  • 200g plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 300ml cold sparkling water
  • 1kg potatoes, peeled and cut into chips
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the potatoes into thick chips, then rinse and pat dry.
  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 160Β°C.
  3. Fry the chips for 5-7 minutes until soft but not browned, then drain and set aside.
  4. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually whisk in sparkling water to make a smooth batter.
  5. Dip the fish fillets into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
  6. Increase oil temperature to 190Β°C and fry the fish for 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy.
  7. Fry the chips again for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
  8. Serve immediately with the fish.

Notes

For extra crispiness, ensure the oil is at the correct temperature and do not overcrowd the fryer.
