Description

A classic homemade French bread that’s easy to make and perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add salt and stir in flour, one cup at a time, until dough is formed.
  3. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into two equal pieces. Shape into loaves and place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  8. Brush loaves with egg white mixed with water.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For a crispier crust, place a pan of hot water in the oven while baking.
