A classic homemade French bread that’s easy to make and perfect for any meal.
Ingredients

- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
- Add salt and stir in flour, one cup at a time, until dough is formed.
- Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch down dough and divide into two equal pieces. Shape into loaves and place on a greased baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Brush loaves with egg white mixed with water.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
For a crispier crust, place a pan of hot water in the oven while baking.
