  • Author: Chef Lalybeth

Description

Salisbury meatballs are juicy beef meatballs simmered in a savory mushroom and onion gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes for a classic comfort food meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Meatballs:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for frying
  • For the Gravy:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Mashed Potatoes:
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. For the Meatballs: In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and pepper. Shape into 12 meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. For the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onion and mushrooms; cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Return meatballs to the skillet with gravy. Simmer covered for 15-20 minutes until meatballs are cooked through.
  5. For the Mashed Potatoes: While the meatballs are simmering, boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper until creamy.
  6. Serve meatballs and gravy over mashed potatoes.

Notes

You can add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra flavor. Make sure the meatballs are not overcooked to keep them juicy.
