A classic chocolate dessert with a gooey fudge sauce that forms beneath a cake layer.

- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 3/4 cups hot water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, 3/4 cup white sugar, and 3 tablespoons cocoa. Stir in milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in nuts if using. Spread batter into prepared pan.
- In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar and 3 tablespoons cocoa. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Pour hot water over the top.
- Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven. The cake will rise to the top and a sauce will form on the bottom. Let cool slightly before serving.
