Description

A classic chocolate dessert with a gooey fudge sauce that forms beneath a cake layer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, 3/4 cup white sugar, and 3 tablespoons cocoa. Stir in milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in nuts if using. Spread batter into prepared pan.
  3. In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar and 3 tablespoons cocoa. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Pour hot water over the top.
  4. Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven. The cake will rise to the top and a sauce will form on the bottom. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for the best experience.
