Description
A classic Southern dish featuring tenderized steak breaded and fried to perfection, served with creamy country gravy, fluffy mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 beef cube steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- Vegetable oil for frying
- For the gravy: 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 cups milk, salt and pepper to taste
- For mashed potatoes: 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup milk, 4 tablespoons butter, salt to taste
- For green beans: 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed, 2 tablespoons butter, salt to taste
Instructions
- Pound the cube steaks to 1/4-inch thickness using a meat mallet.
- In a shallow bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together egg and milk.
- Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in flour.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry steaks for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- For the gravy: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- For mashed potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with milk, butter, and salt.
- For green beans: Steam or boil green beans until tender, about 5-7 minutes. Toss with butter and salt.
- Serve steaks topped with gravy, alongside mashed potatoes and green beans.
Notes
Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to get a crispy coating. For a healthier version, use low-fat milk in the gravy.
