  • Author: Chef Lalybeth

  • Yield: 4 1x

Description

A classic Southern dish featuring tenderized steak breaded and fried to perfection, served with creamy country gravy, fluffy mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 beef cube steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For the gravy: 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 cups milk, salt and pepper to taste
  • For mashed potatoes: 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup milk, 4 tablespoons butter, salt to taste
  • For green beans: 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed, 2 tablespoons butter, salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Pound the cube steaks to 1/4-inch thickness using a meat mallet.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together egg and milk.
  4. Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in flour.
  5. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry steaks for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. For the gravy: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. For mashed potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with milk, butter, and salt.
  8. For green beans: Steam or boil green beans until tender, about 5-7 minutes. Toss with butter and salt.
  9. Serve steaks topped with gravy, alongside mashed potatoes and green beans.

Notes

Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to get a crispy coating. For a healthier version, use low-fat milk in the gravy.
