Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the frosting:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10×15 inch jelly roll pan.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, combine butter, oil, cocoa, and water. Bring to a boil, then pour over the flour mixture.
  4. Stir in buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until well combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. For the frosting: In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa, and milk. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  7. Stir in vanilla and powdered sugar until smooth. Spread over the warm cake.

Notes

Allow the cake to cool slightly before adding the frosting for the best results. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
