Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Stir in flour, salt, and cayenne pepper until smooth.
  4. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  5. Add grated sharp cheddar cheese and stir until melted.
  6. In a greased baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes and cheese sauce alternately.
  7. Bake covered for 50 minutes.
  8. Uncover and sprinkle with additional grated cheese, then bake for another 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

For a creamier texture, use heavy cream instead of milk. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.
