- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 dash cayenne pepper
- 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated cheese for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Stir in flour, salt, and cayenne pepper until smooth.
- Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
- Add grated sharp cheddar cheese and stir until melted.
- In a greased baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes and cheese sauce alternately.
- Bake covered for 50 minutes.
- Uncover and sprinkle with additional grated cheese, then bake for another 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Notes
For a creamier texture, use heavy cream instead of milk. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.
