- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped onion (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until thickened. Add 1 cup of cheese and stir until melted.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Add the remaining potatoes and top with the rest of the sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Cover and bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Notes
For a crispier top, broil for the last 5 minutes. Ensure potatoes are sliced evenly for even cooking.
