Description

A creamy, cheesy layered potato dish that’s a staple for family dinners and holidays, featuring tender potatoes baked in a rich cheese sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until thickened. Add 1 cup of cheese and stir until melted.
  5. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Add the remaining potatoes and top with the rest of the sauce.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Cover and bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Notes

For a crispier top, broil for the last 5 minutes. Ensure potatoes are sliced evenly for even cooking.
